April’s Book Club: We meet a Bold Spirit

April's Book Club with author Linda L. Hunt (center)

This month’s book club meeting was a special treat; Linda Hunt, the author of Bold Spirit not only joined us for our discussion but hosted the meeting at her spacious and inviting retreat center. Linda greeted us with a warm smile and a large pitcher of herbal sun tea as we began to assemble ourselves outside to take advantage of the opportunity to sit in her gardens with the sounds of babbling water and birdsong in the background.

Once everyone settled around the table Linda introduced herself and gave us a brief history of how the retreat center came to be. She and her husband created The Krista Foundation for Global Citizenship with a focus on service in urban America, developing nations and environmental projects. The center was inspired by these three values possessed by her daughter, Krista, who was killed at the age of 25 in an automobile accident in Bolivia. The center serves as a meeting space for the organization in many different ways, sometimes for conferences, at other times for retreats; always, I imagine, it serves compassion, generosity and love.

Our discussion about Bold Spirit had much to do with imagining the twenty-first century equivalent of two women crossing the nation by foot in 1896. Not only was this a difficult thing to wrap our minds around but equally difficult was the idea that this story was nearly lost through the silencing of it by the family.

The act of silencing stories or, more importantly, the practice of passing along family stories instead is the message Linda would like her readers to hear. She talked about the importance of finding a way to include this piece in the story. In the book’s closing Linda states that sometimes silencing of stories is done to protect a family’s image in the face of situations like abuse, alcoholism or origins of birth but that, “at times the silencing of such stories affect those who need to hear them to correctly interpret events in their own lives.”

Remember this and consider whether you participate in the silencing or sharing of your own family’s stories. Do what you can to be your family’s storyteller and please do read Bold Spirit, a story that show’s an earlier picture of our city’s history and invites us all to contribute our own.

Check Out Our Proposed Mission

Back in December a group of Violets met up for our first ever retreat to have some fun and take care of some business. After an evening of fun and silliness and a morning breakfast buffet we settled in to create our Mission Statement and brainstorm for the celebration of our first birthday.

Well, it is at our Shrinking Violet’s First Birthday Bash that we would like to share our mission statement and offer it up for a vote to make it official.

Check it out:

Last Friday night a good number of Violets came together to play, converse, eat and sleep. We then woke up to eat some more before getting down to the business of creating our Mission and planning for the celebration of our first year together. Violet member Jane Silver offered up a cozy place for us to stay. We gathered around the fireplace taking turns indulging in one of the two massage chairs, snacked on pizza, played a silly picture game, laughed, chatted and finished the evening up with a hot tub followed by a sauna.  After a surprisingly good sleep (in true slumber party style most of us slept on the floor) we created a full spread of breakfast delights including pumpkin waffles, fresh fruits, cheeses and more.

All that socializing proved to be great inspiration for our Mission-statement-brainstorming-session because we ended up crafting a statement that we all were excited about in less than an hour! With only a few more hours before we would tie things up we decided to focus our attention on planning for our First Annual Event where we plan to celebrate our first year together and vote in our newly proposed Mission Statement. We pulled together the main details and timeline of our event and assigned roles to those present. Other items we had originally wanted to discuss like better ways to streamline our communications or what other events we might host in 2010 were put on hold as we decided it made more sense to do this after our annual event so that new members could be included.

Please take a look at the notes from our retreat  (click on link in page) and please, please don’t feel shy about letting us know if you would like to participate in any way. We will be meeting at Atticus Coffee House at 10:00am tomorrow morning before Ladies Who Lunch to discuss merchandise and the party; we would love to have more people join us.

I’ll end by sharing the Mission Statement we created and will be presenting for a vote at our Annual Event:

DIY Personal Care Party

deo1

Wednesday night last week* we gathered to make our own deodorant, lip balm and body scrub. We had  a great turnout (with 7 first-timers showing up) and we’ve already heard comments from a few attendees that yes, it’s true, the deodorant really does work- if you’ve ever tried finding a ‘natural’ deodorant that works you’ll understand our cynicism.

As is typical of our events there was interesting conversation, tasty treats and in this case, great teamwork. Many people brought essential oils to share which offered a huge variety of fancy smells to create. Where space was available people squeezed in to zest lemon, melt ingredients and/or help bring it all together.

If you’ve been curious about or interested in making homemade versions of other household or personal care products leave a note in the comments section and we may just end up hosting another of these to make more goodies.

Thanks to everyone who attended, for a fun and pleasant evening.

Without further ado, here are the recipes:

Creamy Deodorant

  • 3 T shea butter
  • 3 T baking soda
  • 2 T corn starch
  • 2 T cocoa butter
  • 2 vitamin e oil gel caps (puncture and squeeze out oil)
  • essential oil

Stir and melt the butters together then add baking soda, corn starch and vitamin e oil. We made a huge batch and then poured the mix into individual jars. Each person then customized their deodorant with the plethora of essential oils that were brought to share.

Lemon Sugar Scrub

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 T lemon zest

Mix together, scoop into jar, top with lid. Enjoy.

Lip Balm

I was given a great recipe by a friend but when it came time to make the lip balm I couldn’t find where I had safely stored the coconut oil I purchased. So, thanks to the internet we came across this general formula and winged it.

  • 20% beeswax
  • 25% shea butter
  • 15% cocoa butter
  • 40% olive oil
  • and just a teensy honey

*Also, please let me apologize for the delay in getting this post up. My computer crashed and also took with it many of the pictures taken at the party. I was able to get a few my husband took.

Chocolate Party Recap: Planning Meeting Take Two

The long overdue 2nd planning meeting of the Shrinking Violet Society happened last night at the charming home of Mariah Rose McKay and Katelyn McLeod. Greeted by the most congenial hostess, Katelyn, we were assembled in the cozy living room and treated to chocolates, fruits, wine and other beverages.

The purpose of this meeting was to evaluate the growth of the Shrinking Violet Society (SVS) and talk about what seems to be working and what may need improvements. We were all really excited about the extent to which the group has grown since its inception; at the time of our meeting the Facebook group numbered 301, at my last check today the group had grown to 306.

A (not so) brief summary of our meeting:

Ladies Who Lunch continues to have a great turnout with a slight decline during the summer. We are looking for a go-getter to take over the luncheon communications. The main needs are simple- just making sure to get the dates posted and announcements out in a timely manner; the fun part is getting to be the one that orchestrates the creation and distribution of the invites!

We discussed how much fun it’s been participating in any number of the events that have taken place and noticed there seem to be a steady group of about 30 or so very active members yet were perplexed as to what might be keeping the majority of our 300+ members from attending.  Is it that many have had scheduling conflicts, or summer plans, or think it’s too late to show up, or like the idea but don’t have the time or could it be some are shy about coming alone?

We want everyone to know that many of our members have come to the group solo and a common comment is that people are surprised with how welcoming and friendly the group is. So, if you’ve attended and had a great time please extend an invite to someone you know. If you’ve not attended, please do.

The topic of membership came up and brief points on the benefits and pitfalls were mentioned; this is a conversation worth continuing in greater depth.

Many new events and meetings are on the horizon: a painting party, DIY Personal Care Party, an outdoor recreation group, screen printing in September, potential craft night at The Top Stitch and our “must attend” Planning Meeting #3 where we’ll discuss our long-range vision and create a mission statement.

The Shrinking Violet Society is an extremely creative and dynamic group whose growth and direction is directly guided by the interests of its members. We seem to be connected by our desire to fill a void that has seemed to exist in our community. If you’re itching to fill a void of your own then join us and help to shape this budding social group.
