Growing the Network

A lot of people ask how to “grow” networks of collaboration and innovation. This is impossible until they have enough network literacy to understand what it means for a “network” to actually be “growing.”

1st Annual Clothing Swap 2007
(Before the Shrinking Violets even existed in Spokane!)

Here are 9 simple indicators of network growth. They become both indicators and strategies for the intentional growth of existing networks.

  1. People in the network gain broader and deeper awareness of the available assets in the network
  2. People in the network gain broader and deeper awareness of potential new collaborators and co-conspirators in the network
  3. People in the network spend more time introducing people to one another who are 2+ steps away from each other in the network
  4. People in the network spend more time introducing themselves to others who are 2+ steps away from them in the network
  5. People in the network discover more new opportunities to engage and combine their assets to create a future different from the past
  6. People in the network have more conversations together about their dreams and assets than their problems and deficiencies
  7. People in the network value change and differences as more valuable to the network’s growth than similarities and protecting a status quo
  8. People in the network become “network weavers” who intentionally commit time and imagination to looking for new ways to connect unconnected people in the network
  9. People in the network together become more self-organizing, innovative, agile, inclusive, strengths-based, and dedicated to shared thrivancy

Women for Murray Invite

Dear Shrinking Violets,

This is an open invitation to join us for the Women for Murray Day of Canvassing. What’s a better way to bridge the women of this community together than by supporting the woman that helps make this process possible. The Washington State Democratic Coordinated Campaign endorses Senator Patty Murray and we’re working hard to get her re-elected. We’re quickly approaching the August 17th Primary and we’re diving right into our get-out-the-vote campaign. We’re looking for all the support we can get and we invite the Shrinking Violets to join our Women for Murray Day for Canvassing.

“Senator Patty Murray has been a champion for women by making our issues a priority in Congress. She’s worked tirelessly to pass the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and Paycheck Fairness Act because she is determined to eliminate wage discrimination and unfairness in the workplace. She’s fought for women to have the opportunity to make decisions about their bodies by increasing funding for the National Family Planning Program (Title X) and pushing the FDA to make Plan B over the counter. During the heath care debate, she opposed the Stupak amendment and ensured that the final Health Care Bill contained strong protection language. Patty Murray works every day to solve the problems facing women in Washington State.”
- The Patty Murray Campaign

We hope to re-elect Patty Murray so she can continue fighting for women across the country. Without her, our laws that determine our rights over reproductive choices are at risk. Our right to equality in the workplace and access to affordable healthcare, it’s all at risk. We hope to see you Saturday to continue this mission to protect our rights.

The Plan: Meet at the Washington State Democrats Coordinated Campaign Office at Washington & Sprague at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 7th. From there we’ll have a group chat and divide ourselves into groups for carpooling. The more support we can get, the more ground we can cover.

RSVP: Nicole@WAVictory.org, (509) 838-2703
1 S. Washington, Spokane, WA 99201

FBC Biker Babes

Women are thought of as an “indicator species” when it comes to how bike friendly a community is. By the looks of this picture, Spokane is well on its way!

Date: Saturday, June 26, 2010
Time: 3:00pm – 7:00pm
Location: In Mariah and Kara’s Sweet Ass Attic
Street: 1721 W. Riverside Apt. B

Bring: Scissors, stickers, paper, pens, stamps, tape, glue, decorations, ribbon, pictures, photo albums, die-cuts, hole punches, etc. And a snack or beverage of your choice to share.

Our land lord has generously allowed us to use the empty studio apartment in the attic of our mansion for this event. We will have everything set up with tables and chairs so we can be in one big room together, this will be fun. See you there!

Fructose Free BBQ Sauce

I was complaining about the high fructose corn syrup in the Longhorn BBQ sauce I bought a while back at Yoke’s. Stephanie Smith turned right around and shared this delicious recipe from Very Vegetarian.

Saute 1 medium diced onion, 2 teaspoons (I use more) minced garlic, 1 tablespoon chili powder, and 1 teaspoon dry mustard in a little oil or water for 5 minutes or until onion is soft.

Add 1.5 cups tomato ketchup (I use homemade), 1/2 cup vinegar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tablespoons mushroom soy sauce (I omit, can’t ever find it here), 2 teaspoons molasses, and 1/3 cup sugar.

Mix well and simmer 15 minutes.

Enjoy!

Calling all Closeted Cheerleaders!

We have been issued a special invitation to help create a “scene on the street” this Thursday with the P-Jammers, Spokane’s own local alternative marching band.

Hello Ladies,

On behalf of the P-Jammers marching band, I’d like to invite any or all of you to join us for a performance at the Knitting Factory, presented by the Inlander the evening of Thursday, May 27th, 2010.

The show features local musicians. They have asked us to play in the adjoining area outside prior to the show and then enter playing and do a number on stage to kick off the show, which begins at 8 p.m. Our mission is to create a “wild and crazy, fun atmosphere”. I would be interested in adding flag bearers, baton twirlers, dancers, cheerleaders, hula hoopers, bubble blowers, or what have you, to this, and other possible future events.

Please let me know of any interest you may have.

Thanks,

Greg Youmans, P-Jammers Marching Band

Selina the Super!

Recently I wrote a post about Spokane’s “Earth Lovin’ Hotties” over on the Spovangelist. One of our very own Shrinking Violets was nominated so many times I thought it would be a good idea to do a member profile on the woman instead. The following is paraphrased from one of Selina’s many loyal friends, and is interspersed with links and pictures from another.

***

Selina Shehan has become very dear to me over the past four years. During this time I’ve had plenty of opportunity to reflect on her seemingly uncanny luck. Organizations rain awards on her blonde head; companies are down-right giddy at the thought of giving her free products; and it wouldn’t surprise me if Publisher’s Clearing House has her on speed-dial.  However, I’ve also come to see that Selina’s greatest accomplishments have nothing to do with luck and everything to do with her tenacious devotion, her rock-hard work ethic, and her boundless energy and charm.

I think it’s easy to lump Selina’s accomplishments into the luck category because she makes being an awesome person look so damn effortless.  Being the Commute Trip Reduction coordinator for her company requires hard work that closely resembles organizing a small military campaign, but you’d never know that from how smoothly Selina’s program runs. When she won the most prestigious award a CTR coordinator can win, Selina accepted it with her usual good grace.

When she became interested in longboarding, she took her helmet in one hand and her gumption in the other and marched up to the first pack of longboarders she found. Less than a year later, she had organized them into a cohesive group of state-wide members with a website, regular meeting times, and sponsored competitions!

The two loves of Selina’s life, the environment and physical activity, got married and had a baby when Selina organized Spokane’s GreenSkate to promote longboarding as an eco-friendly form of travel and exercise.  GreenSkate participated in Spokane’s 2010 Earth Day street fair and was hugely successful. Thanks to Selina’s mad grant-writing skills, she secured 100 helmets for GreenSkate give away to Spokane kids to promote safe boarding, and thanks to her networking abilities she was able to get local skate shops to donate stickers and boards as promotional items. The latest cherry-on-top was a workshop Selina taught in conjunction with GreenSkate for beginning female longboarders.

Selina is the lead vocalist for local rock band Cryptid.

None of this would have been possible had Selina sat on her laurels and waited for luck to find her. Instead, she chewed those leaves up, ate them for breakfast, and went out and conquered Spokane with little more than her striped stockings and a lot of heart. The longer I know her, the more I realize that Selina’s not the lucky one: it’s the rest of the human race that’s lucky to have her on our side.

Other fun facts about Selina:

1) She is a vegetarian.
2) She skateboards to work.
3) She runs and swims like the wind (and even manages to win medals at such prestigious local events as the Bare Buns Fun Run).
4) She owns a jewelry company called Spike and Lola, named after her viciously loyal dogs.
5) She is a Unitarian Universalist.
6) She does graphic design and illustration for renowned clients, such as Rings and Things Wholesale.
